The release of opensuse 11.1 brought many changes some due to the new kde 4 and others completely unrelated. Many users are blaming everything into kde 4. I use opensuse 11 (64b) for business and personal use. At the present I am testing opensuse 11.1 (64b) to see if I can upgrade or wait until the next version. There is no question that this is a major revision and the decision is not easy. My approach is the following. I. Areas that must run well in the new version OpenOffice mail merge dvd burning compiz-fusion able to use atapi tape (ait-1) mythtv uvc and camera controls for Orbit-AF VMware workstation Crossover Evolution II. Non standard application or similar to replace them This list is long but not as important as the first one. Some are programs that can be replaced . I do not include in this lists any dev tools. tuxcards dvdstyler locate kd4-kpp audacity mplayer easytags ex falso etc etc. III. Special backup and transfers from 11 > 111.1 kdewallet evolution vmware VM crossover OO templates tuxcards bookmarks /usr/local/bin scripts mythtv backup data base compiz profiles Croossover bottles amarok play lists IV. Problems I have encounter: 1. After a trouble free and fast installation I could ping but neither firefox or the repositories could be access. The solution was to disable ipv6. First I disable it only in firefox and it work ok, then I realize I could not see or access the repositories so I restore the default in firefox and I disable ivp6 at system level, using yast /network. Since then, it is working without problem. I do not understand what is going on here. It is interesting that a very similar problem occurred when I was looking at fedora 10. I did not have any problems with opensuse 11. I reinstall opensuse 11.1 many times and this problem is reproducible. I wonders if it is partially related to the ISP (qwest) 2. Compiz does not work directly from the dvd. Only when using the upgrades from X11:XGL it works reliable. Compiz for me is not eyecandy but a tool that increase productivity. Kde 4 has many 3D effects but they are not at the level of compiz yet for me to replace it. 3. Evolution does not work. I start evolution and I get this error <<Error while Fetching Mail. Host lookup failed: pop3.attglobal.net: Name or service not known>> Of course the pop3 setup is OK. It is the same as in opensuse 11. kmail works fine. Then after I realized it did not work, I transfered all the messages, address books, and accounts setup from evolution under opensuse 11. All was transfer OK including the account setup. Again the same error. I can not figure out what is wrong. Is this problem related to the ipv6 described above? Is this related to the high dependency of evolution in mono?. I have to solve it before I move to 11.1 or figure out how to replace evolution. This is not simple. 4. VMware workstation 6.5. So far I have been unable to install it. I can not compile one of the modules. Today I will work more on it. Of course this is related to the kernel and not to opensuse 11.1 or kde 4 <g> 5. KDE4. It is different and with the help of other users (thxs Clayton) I realized that not only I can do everything I need but even more. The desktop folder and widgets reminds me of OS/2 WPS which imho has never been surpassed. So kde 4 is a major and great change. I listed here because it was a problem I encountered in this case due to the different personality of kde 4 but I would love to be able to upgrade to get into it more and more. In summary if I can solve 3 and 4 I will upgrade. The reason I post this long message is because I see a lot of unhappiness about this new opensuse release but I do not see a system use to make a rational evaluation of a product. The 4 steps I use help me to evaluate a new version for my real use. Steps I and III are very important. I keep a list (longer than I wrote here) with this approach and then I go one by one. Happy new year to all and thanks to the devs for all the great work done. -=terry=- Note: Before I send this message in the "working version of 11.0 <g>) I decided to keep working on the evolution / ipv6 issue. This is what I did 1. I got the address of the DNS server from my isp (qwest) looking at the at the status page on the router using the web utility. 2. I open the /etc/resolv.conf and the only line there was the router address nameserver 192.168.0.1 3. Yast/Network Device/Networking Settings/Hostname-DNS and I add under Name Server 1 the ip I got from the status page of the router. 205.171.3.25 So now it will be added to the resolv.conf. 4. I reboot and everything is OK. The ipv6 is enable as it was with the default set up I left the message as before this fix to show the problems users get. Why it did not happen in any of the previous versions? Well the answer is not important but we have to develop a better system than bugzilla. Bugzilla it is important for bugs but is should a simple place where we can report like * problem: * solution: * comments: Then if there is need for more information can be requested. ...getting close to say YES to the upgrade. Today I will work with VMware. Ciao again. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
