I'd tried that before - but did so again just to check.
No improvement, really. There is no "Desktop Effects" menu item, but I can start via simple-cssm manually. Still get the SIGSEGV crash in kde-window-decorator, accompanied by loss of window decorations (plus some additional desktop artefacts that I can go into separately if it's relevant). Restarting the window manager via fusion-icon gets back the decorations and fixes all that, except for the crashes in kde-window-decorator, which remain repeatable.
Full circle back to where I was. It's usable, but with troubles.

Just following up to myself, I can now retract that statement. I am very happy indeed to report that with the latest builds from X11:XGL (downloaded just a couple of hours ago), emerald now works. Not only that, although I still get the crashes reported earlier in kde-window-decorator, they do not happen at all when using the emerald decorator. Much happier ..... Thank you.
