I downloaded the ATI driver from the AMD web site and ran the installer. I chose the option to create an RPM for Suse 11.1 and installed it with zypper. Then I ran aticonfig --initial and rebooted.
On the forum, there's been 1 success report, it involved not running "aticonfig --initial"; I noted the report, but cannot confirm, as my battle with 3D drivers has not begun yet, due to more pressing issues. Perhaps try searching there and see if you could find it.
