I would check pulseaudio and make sure you belong to the audio group. Confirm that sound does _not_ work for root, then we know you have a sound problem as opposed to a config issue.
I was going to write in detail about that in another post, so as not to confuse the two issues (and ended up bitching about it anyway), but thanks for your reply. I have added myself to the audio group, which makes no difference. I have also confirmed sound does not work for root. But I will post a new message about this issue.
That setting should be there somewhere 'cause I know I tried it but no longer use it since I have less than 8 'windows' open on 8 desktops. Persevere and you will be rewarded. Your best bet is to right click on the taskbar and check all the settings. I'm not sure whether the new control centre has it in there.
