A better way to handle plugable filesystem devices is to define them in /etc/auto.misc and let the automounter deal with them. You can define similar options here as in fstab, including mounting by label or uuid.
The problem with including them in fstab is that if you reboot the machine with them missing (i.e. not plugged in) mount will complain and unnecessary errors will be reported during booting.
Beginning in Jan2008 and through yesterday, the memory stick was booted from fstab, and there was never an error such as you mention. I will keep a copy of your note, however, and study it later, to learn from it what I can. In the time, I have found the errant <.fstab.swp> file. In the short time I had before having to rush off for a dental appointment, I didn't succeed in deleting it, but I was able to change its name, so I assume it is out of potential mischief, and I am sure I will be able to delete it altogether now that I am back. Thanks.
I do this with an external usb HDD that I use as an external backup for /home. If I leave this drive powered on at the initial boot, my machine hangs during POST. If I didn't power it up before mount looked for it (when it was in fstab), I'd get boot time errors. Once I figured out that it belonged in auto.misc, no more problems. I can power it up after the machine is booted and I'm logged in and it is consistently mounted to the same mount point (/media/backup). To avoid rewriting my backup script I simply then created a symlink to the original mount point that I used to have in fstab.
