Thought of giving one more try as per Vahe's suggestion.
opneSUSE booted up after installation got completed, without any restart. So I did run "grub-install /dev/sdb", however rebooting and trying to boot from "sdb" failed. Booting up with DVD and "aborting" and selecting "Boot Installed System" from sdb also gave linuxrc error.
Still can't understand why the option of booting from external USB has been made so crippled, it looks so deliberated.
I don't think it is deliberately, but just more problems with boot loader installation script. It shouldn't be that hard, as one can expect that owners of external hard disk can come on idea to install openSUSE there, and that will be impossible for the very same reasons it fails on USB stick. Inability to start system again makes a problem. It came out that there is no boot loader at all, and attempt with installation DVD and hidden option to start installed system failed as you described. It is old text mode installer where one has to load modules to boot the system, but I have to discover what modules. In the meantime I'll try to see how to do necessary work manually. BTW, there is more articles on the wiki about installation of openSUSE to USB stick. http://en.opensuse.org/Live_USB_stick which is probably better option for any flash memory based media. Normal installation will use flash media as hard disk, ie. often writing to it, which will shorten life span of USB stick. I almost missed this: http://lizards.opensuse.org/category/documentation/ there is few ways how to make live USB stick. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
