I'll join Jim Henderson's group ;-) "Please keep replies on-topic, so everyone benefits." As we discuss general security topic it should go at least in a new thread. On Tuesday 15 July 2008 05:56:58 am Philipp Thomas wrote:

but there are special locks that have even design hidden. It is just a matter of protection level.
Hiding somthing does not raise the protection, that's a common misconception.
Publicity simply doesn't help in all situations.
If the design has flaws, someone will eventually discover and exploit them.
Sure. [1]
Make the design open and let experts analyze and discuss it and chances are much higher that possible flaws will be detected *before* the lock is in wide use.

The problem with the experts is that there are 2 kinds of them. One that will tell what is wrong and how to make your method better, and the other that will keep findings for themselves. The later group tend to be more agile looking for a loopholes. Peer review can't assure that the best experts in the field discuss the topic. [1] It is notorious fact that: 1- the best experts making security systems, 2- they are tested by the experts that have part of their career breaking in the systems, 3- their collective work is finally probed by those that are still on the other side of the law, and they succeed from time to time. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
