Here on 10.3 my logitech headset is connected to /dev/dsp1 when plugged in (/dev/dsp is the on-board sound chip).
The device gets created when I plug in the headset, so could you unplug and replug the headset and check the creation time for the devices? Not ideal but it should work.
I would guess there is a more general way, but I don't know what that is.

It's a good start for him, the other way that some apps do it is hardware#:#, though I have seem only one KMIX, actually use USB Headset as a reference.
