Just to second the comment on VirtualBox. I have been using it almost exclusively in place of VMWare. It works very well. It is not a clone of VMWare so some bits run differently, but I find it is "lighter", faster, and more versatile than VMWare... but that's for what I use it for... trhe classic YMMV. It has a nice "seamless" mode that allows you to run the guest OS applications as if they are running right on the host (convenient for example for those times when you have a Windows only application that you must run for business reasons). Worth noting, USB just works in VMWare, and in VirtualBox, you need to do a little (documented) tinkering.
