Most wireless adapters need firmware. Did you, in addition to the kernel module, install the ralink-firmware package?
It was indeed the missing firmware. Thanks for the hint. Here's what induced the error. Before using SuSE, I've always been using the drivers directly from http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com, and I even maintained the rt61 Slackware package (well: the SlackBuild script) for slackbuilds.org. Now this package comes *with* the firmware. No need to download extra files, 'make install' installs the relevant *.bin files in $INSTALLDIR/lib/firmware. I just assumed the driver I downloaded already had the firmware included. Result: hours of hairpulling, when a simple 'ls /lib/firmware' could have shown what was wrong.
