Surely you did not think it originated in your mail client??
I suppose it's useful if you do not filter well, but it's sort of messy and makes it hard to see full subject lines of long thread titles, which the netiqette guide for the mailing lists recommends.
Well, while I agree that this sort of Subject adulteration is unnecessary and unwelcome, it is near-universal. (Like top-posting, thread hijacking, failure to trim any quoted material at all or to proofread one's postings before issuing the "send" command...)

You need not. At least not if you use a good mail client. KMail has a filter action "Rewrite Header" It can be used to excise these incursions designed for those who are users of impoverished mail clients or who are impoverished users of capable mail clients.
