It was a serious question because it explains why you've never seen the behaviour. Firefox on SUSE Linux 10.0 was never built with startup notification and therefore would never show the issue.
Well, I just did a quick test on my 10.3 system and I still don't see the problematic behavior Richard describes. No windows change desktops. If the target Firefox window is on a desktop other than the one with KMail, it stays there. If it's on the same desktop as KMail, it does come to the front, but does not change desktops.

That sort of behaviour i believe is controled by the settings in the preferences section specifficslly the what to do when a lionk is clicked on part either open in a tab as i use Seamonkey (far better) or open in new window .
