I have to agree - I've upgraded machines from redhat 8 to fedora core while running, obviously not the redhat way, but by using apt-get it was no problem at all to keep the box in service, during the upgrade process. When it was convenient, we booted into the new kernel, marking the final step of the upgrade process. I know people have updated suse the same way - surely we don't need to regress from what we were able to do 5 years ago?
