I still don't understand... I tried to copy this .img file to the same partition, and it copied until I stoped it (after 4 GB). Then with this partly copied file the properties of the partition showed a 50% used space.
To further illustrate the fact that the logical size of a file (that reported by ls, e.g.) need not equal the amount of disk space required to store it, repeat your copying experiment but give the the cp option "--sparse=always" and you'll find that the file can be copied despite the apparent fact that it seems to require most of the partition's available space.
