Personally, I would not update a production system. I would just run SLES9 until the hardware it's so old, it has to be replaced. Then I would install the latest SLES on the new hardware. I'm not saying you should not do it because it depends on the software it's running on the system and how (un)important it is.
Yes, I agree with you. But in this case it is not a mission-critical system and can be stopped.
