I have a Dell Latitude D430 running with OpenSUSE 10.3. It has an Alps touchpad, configured with synaptics driver. The tapping on touchpad to simulate clicks behaves very strangely: it works for a while, then stops, and then starts working again after a couple of reboots. When the tapping stops working, the touchpad still allows me to move the mouse pointer. However, when I run synclient -m 100, it refuses to report the pointer coordinates. It constantly says that x and y coordinates are 0 even if the pointer is moving around. When the taps are working, synclient is working normally, too, reporting the changes in pointer coordinates as one would expect. I don't see any relevant error messages in either /var/log/messages. There is a short message in XOrg.0.log saying "Synaptics DeviceOff called", but nothing else. This touchpad seems to behave normally under Windows (not particularly well tested, though, since I don't care for Windows and normally run on Linux). The syndaemon is not running on the system. I experimented with trying to change configuration parameters a little, but this didn't seem to help. I did a google search, but the only information that seems to come up is that Ubuntu users had a problem some time back with tapping disabled after suspend and/or switch to a different user (not relevant in my case), and that it was fixed with the x server updates last year. What can I do to debug this further?
