Solved:
1) Reinstalled trusty old fglrx 8.40.4 after generating dist-specific pkg.
Then I was getting: Compiz (core) - Fatal: No composite extension
2) Added to xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "Enable" EndSection
(previously, didn't have to do this, as it was already there)
Now I had compiz with no window borders and no cube
3) Launched fusion-icon from the terminal
Now I was getting: compiz: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
4) Created a script containing: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libGL.so.1 fusion-icon
5) Added startup program in Control Center > Sessions to run above script
Note: performance with all drivers newer than 8.40.4 has been absolutely terrible. I've tinkered with the newer versions and the ATI Repo versions -- at least on this machine, XGL on 8.40.4 spanks AIGLX.
Adam, The newer drivers are a lot _faster_ than the older drivers in my experience. If you would like to try the latest 8.47 driver, I have it built for 10.3 for i386 at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/hardware/computers/p35a/fglrx_7_1_0_SUSE... the 10.3 x68-64 package is available at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/hardware/computers/nirvana/fglrx64_7_1_0... see the sample xorg.conf at: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/compiz/xorg.conf.compiz.20080221 If you are installing your own driver, you will need the kernel-source installed so the fglrx.ko kernel module can be built. Also, remember to uninstall the old fglrx packages (from runlevel 3 as root) before installing the new fglrx package with: # rpm -e ($rpm -qa | grep fglrx) && rpm -Uvh fglrx_7_1_0_SUSE103-8.471-1.i386.rpm (the post-install script for the rpm builds the kernel module against the kernel source) Then, # modprobe fglrx && depmod -A reboot and you are done For a longer version of the howto, see: http://www.3111skyline.com/download/linux/howto/ati_quick-reference The 8.47 driver contains a number of fixes that improve scrolling, etc. and the latest updates to compiz 7.4 are impressive as well. Make sure you have the X11 repository added to your Yast/zypper repositories: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/X11:/XGL/openSUSE_10.3/ The just update->all packages->update if a newer version is available and it will pull in the new compiz packages. -- David C.
