I've got 2¢ to add here.
I'm primarily a WinXP user, but have been tinkering with Linux for
close to 10 years (usually Suse). I've got what I believe to be a
wide, but shallow, skill-level.
I've never bothered to try to sue the help icon on my screen. I've
been using PCs since the early-90's, make my living doing
networking/admin/consulting jobs (mainly in the Windows world), and
experience has taught me that wherever canned help mechanisms take me
end up wasting my time.
I've never called a mainstream help line and spoken with a rep that
was more knowledgeable than I am about whatever problem I was
experiencing. With rare exception, I've never found useful help at a
manufacturer webpage. I've DEFINITELY never received any help from
online (hdd or web) help manuals or printed troubleshooting pages.
I don't know exactly which IRC channel it was, but years ago I tried
to get some linux-related help via IRC and was ignored by the other
participants in the channel.
Until now I was unaware of the IRC channel you mention above.
I've been ignoring an LIRC problem on my OpenSuse 10.3 system for a
couple of months. I'll have to give the IRC channel you mention a try
if I have time this weekend.

no, but it's almost impossible to fix a printed book :-) and the next
one is different, so fixing it is not possible either...
Beginners usually don't fix book -- they just want their problems solved.
But you're right, a printed book can't be corrected later. ;)
know the exact numbers, but that's rougly the trend that we are
facing now.
may be you don't poll the low band users...
*I* did nothing, it was done by marketing. :) So I can't comment on the
method they used.
