[opensuse] Behavior of the New Software applet

The icon of this applet is permanently orange in color. At irregular intervals (several times a day), it puts up a notice telling me that new software is ready and inviting me to install it. After the apparently spurious installation is complete, the icon becomes green (which it ought to be most of the time) for a matter of a few seconds, then returns to its usual (abnormal) orange condition.
