maybe it is not a problem with smart, but your rpm db.
try: rpmdb --rebuilddb
I did that earlier (or actually 'rpm --rebuilddb', which must be the same thing) . It made no difference. And YasT is able to work properly, as well as various rpm query commands.
then: smart upgrade --update
