Why is there a dot / period there? That's the shorthand for the "source" command. You're telling the shell to read and execute commands from the argument (in this case, "PATH=$PATH:/usr/games"). Secondly, the diagnostic seems nonsensical. Even if the PATH variable were not set or set to an empty value, the diagnostic should have been: PATH=:/usr/games: No such file or directory All in all, I cannot make sense of what you report.
