Linux will use all the memory it can. There is no "excess" memory. More memory means more cached. Less resorting to swap. With todays prices no point going with less then 2gig on a new machine. Unless the seller has goofy upgrade pricing then take the base machine and upgrade it yourself. 4 gig makes less sense from a dollar stand point.
