In Linux you are very much on your own.
That is very much not true. It is true that there are a lot of people out there who pretend to know things (or think they do) when they really don't, but that is not exclusive to linux. The ability to judge the appropriateness of a suggested solution is more important than knowing the answer yourself. I have seen many suggestions on many mailing lists which, if implemented, would have totally destroyed the installation. But that has nothing whatever to do with linux, and everything to do with human nature. Many of these emails were on lists unrelated to linux Besides, as was pointed out, you have many professional options for support. And there are many highly knowledgable persons on this mailing list and others. But if you want to rely on mailing lists, you have to learn to distinguish good answers from bad.
