I have an AMD 64 Athelon which can run the 32 bit version of OpenSuse perfectly, but when I boot up from the 64 disc and select install, the screen goes black and stays there. Am I missing something? Or does AMD 64 not mean that it's a 64 bit processor?
In general amd 64 systems can run linux x86_64 - but there could be some issue with your motherboard such that the 64 bit linux x86_64 kernel isn't liking it. If 32-bit works, there's no harm in staying 32 bit until it's time to buy your next motherboard. If anything, you may have an easier time with multimedia and 3rd party software on the 32-bit OS.
