This is the job of Cyrus-SASL. There is a ldap-Plugin for Cyrus-SASL available. And you can use ldap with saslauthd or saslauthd and pam.
Sure, this is the default way the mail server setup is handled in SLES, it integrates nicely with the rest of the system (most things are prepared for LDAP authentication). I really see no need for involving databases which weren't designed for authentication.
