Here's the outline of what happened 1) I have one E-machine here in this office. It's an older p4 version, I think about 2003-4 ish time frame was when it was bought. upgrade was needed as box was still on 9.2 version and we have policy here that upgrades to lowest supported versions.. meaning, 9.2 is on last legs in this office. IF it cant UG it has to be retired 2) We upgraded thru clean ( Klean ? <g>) install .. yesterday. All was well except it only offered an 800 x 800 video .. which user said was unacceptable ( Users , grrrr !! ) I told him to take it as set until everything was complete .. after the install was complete it *might* be happier w/ a higher res ;) 3) I thought perhaps just maybe user would be happier w/ a working ( 10.2) box ??? Well completed install, booted into his home dir. Where his former settings took over and gave him a higher res.. all ok, 4.) Working box , all is well, right? WRONG.. anytime he had to shut down or reboot he got the garbahje many of us might remember form early days when some unnamed OSes were making it unpleasant for suppliers or writers of hardware interfaces to work for others ??? And one was often *stuck* w/ a generic driver for a generically id-ed vid card.. where you might get a weird tye dyed pattern before the video showed up .. when it would , cross fingers here, clear up and clean up the display.. I am talking the dark ages here, but I believe there are not a few of us here on this list from those times. 5) My user who isn't tech savvy especially, but thinks he hears or read something somewhere that he had a *corrupted install* decides to do some *tweaking* on his own fiddles around w/ his video settings until one last time when he got a message that it was too hot and the network was going down immediately. Which it did... I didn't send the message and the "network" certainly didn't go down, just his part of it.. machine just shut down , then he was able to get it to boot back up.. but couldn't get stable video. I.e the video was rolling and couldn't sync.horizontally. He claims he didn't do anything to it.. but <shrug> ( I can only monitor the box.. no video, nanny cams or other similar.) so, reinstall it.. but this time it wouldn't install. So we went to 10.0 ( gives em a few more months to replace this box w/o it being out of service for the time.) Today we installed 10.0 which I have had no problems w/ before.. and it seems to be running fine. Except it doesn't have the stuff he has now seen avail . on 10.2 . Then we run into the problems that XYZ oprog doesn't run.. Well do you have all the updates? Ï tried that but Yast keeps giving me a lot of garbage... Later determined to be it wants to downgrade a lot of stuff to make him use older versions of whatever it is.. ( pearl, bogofilter, some other things.. ) I told him to downgrade everything til yast was happy.. after that it might upgrade all the stuff at once happily. I havent, yet, heard the outcome of all that, but I will. I am sure I will ... Sooooooo , I guess I need input from anyone who has emachines, and what version they are and what suse version they run... or any weirdness that happened etc.any workarounds that you guys in your wisdom have found. Do any of you have late versions of emachines that work w/ 10.2 ? ( There have to be some . ) The downside of a small shop is not enough systems to test.. ( I can take out his emachine and replace it w/ a box that does do 10.2 , but is slower. That wasn't acceptable ( a bit like his mantra ) but it may have to be if there isn't a budget to get him a new box.. plus we need several new monitors .. -- j -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
