I have a machine with three SATA drives. I didn't want Grub/Lilo on drives 1 or 2, so I temporarily disconnected these and installed 10.2 on drive 3 (which already has Windows Vista installed).
Everything went smoothly and I was able to boot into Vista or 10.2 using Lilo.
However, when I reconnected drives 1 and 2 and booted to drive 3 (via the BIOS) Lilo ran and I was able to boot into Vista without problems. But when I try to boot into 10.2 the startup hangs after a while and the machine requires a hard reboot. I disconnected drives 1 and 2 and all works normally again! Can anyone help this relatively new Linux user?
When you connect new drives, your old drive gets renamed. Assuming it is in SATA port 3, and the two other drives are in ports 1 and 2, your drive is now called sdc. What you need to do is edit /etc/lilo.conf and change the append line from root=/dev/sdaX to root=/dev/sdcX, where X is the number of your partition. You then have to run /sbin/lilo for the changes to take effect You then have to edit /etc/fstab and change all references to sda so that they read sdc instead After that you should be able to power down, insert the two other disks, and then it should boot correctly -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
