Do you have alsamixergui installed? If not then do so and then fiddle with the sliders to make sure that, for example, the LINE is actually set to something more than the default of 0 volume. I think that you will find that this may be the problem with not getting any sound using alsa.
I use audacity a lot (even though I can't get gwenview to do anything productive) and it works fine with alsa. But almost everytime I start an audacity session, I have to play with one or another mixer (using kmix today) to get it record anything.
