that should work. once you don't want to monitor traffic, just move
yourself to the switch.

I thank you all for your help. Now tell me this, let's say for the sake of argument I made a SuSE Linux router and I am usig a HUB(or maybe a Switch) to route traffic from my second wired NIC to four computers. Since they are all ultimately connecting to that one suse box, it can be set to monitor and also log the network activity?
Also would I want to do this for any other service like let's say I wanted to firewall my whole network not just one machine. Would i have to have all of my computers on the network ultimately connect to the suse box with the firewall configured? If not, I am guessing I would want to connect to a switch with a port in monitor mode so that I can do this. I am just trying to get a better feel for using SuSE for more than just desktop usage but more practical network usage.
Also, if anyone is running a WAN, let me know what you did to set it up. Thanks all and I am glad to be a part of this mailing list. I feel OpenSuSE to be one of the most powerful distros out there.

to have the box be like a router that the other computers connect to or is just
being on the network suitable to act as a server. In the past I've done routing
but if I don't need to route in order to monitor, manage, and log network
activity, that's awesome. Also, anyone know of how to do those three acts on
opensuse 10.2 or of any third party software that will do that? Thanks all.
If you're using it to monitor network activity, it has to be able to see that activity. This means that if you're simply plugged into one port of a switch, you won't see much, unless that port can be configured to mirror other ports.
