First, and most troublesome, it crashes when I log out. I can hibernate just fine (which was an interesting and unexpected twist) but if I log out, (or if I shut down) the machine locks up totally and I have to force the power off with the "hold the power button down for ten seconds" trick.
I've seen this in the past when shutdown tries to unload modules, usually those having to do with ACPI modules ac battery button fan processor and thermal. you can (as root) rmmod each of these in turn and see if the system locks up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thanks for the suggestion John. I managed to unload button, battery, ac, edd, fan, and thermal without any trouble. I couldn't unload processor as it said it was in use. Is there something more I can do to try to force that, perhaps? I also realized that my sysadmin knowledge is lacking; I tried to use insmod to put them back in place and that didn't work. Not sure why, would like to know though.
