Very simply put: $ mkfifo sig $ l sig prw-r--r-- 1 theo users 0 Nov 14 22:29 sig| $ while [ 1 ];do uptime >sig;done & $ read sigline < sig $ echo $sigline 10:31pm up 3:44, 5 users, load average: 0.05, 0.22, 0.16 Every time you read from sig you get an updated line, or lines if you feed more in the fifo.
