This happened on several machine with both 10.1 OSS (and some of the rc releases) and the boxed set of 10.1. After starting the machine, squid is running, but not usable. All that's needed to remedy is to restart squid. Problem solved.
OK, I've figured it out. Both at work and at home I use connections that start only after I've logged into my desktop: wireless with NetworkManager at work, commandline ppp with my celphone's GPRS/EDGE. So, when squid starts, it reads my DNS settings from /etc/resolv.conf - each time getting settings that useless for the current connection. Hence when I restart squid, it reads /etc/resolv.conf again (which had been changed in the meantime) and works normally. Hans
