My laptop crashed in the middle of running an online update (Suse 10.1). Now i can't start X11 (the X11 base package was being updated when it crashed), and when i try to reinstall X or do an online update (via the console yast) almost all packages fail with an error saying i must "rebuild the database". But... what database? How? i'm assuming it's an rpm db, but... WTF??? A useless error message. Of course, i can't paste in the complete output from the error because it's on my laptop console.
Try running, as root rpm --rebuilddb
