I didn't get any suggestions, so I did the easiest thing - reinstall all the printing software through YaST. Good news: now the printer works :) Bad news - this system feels more like Windows than Unix - if it doesn't work, reinstall it :(.
PS logrotate doesn't seem to have an include file for CUPS. Should it? I've created one, which will hopefully remove my 200 MB+ log files!
