you need use "root (hd0,6)", not "root (hd0,7)" if your root partition is on /dev/hda7.
Thanks, that indeed does successfully re-install grub. Unfortunately the behavior did not change. During boot I get a message about loading stage 1.5, please wait. Then it never comes back. To get my machine usable for some other work, I booted a DOS floppy and did a "fdisk /mbr". I'm now able to boot the Win2K partition again. I still want to get Linux on this box, but it will have to wait for another day. I might try installing an older SUSE version on this box. (It has never had any version of linux on it before, but I have it loaded on several very similar machines.)
