First time moderation, or approved members, what is the difference? Someone takes time to read the mail and let poster subscribe, or not.
very small in work (all the first time users needs to hit a moderator), but quite important for the user.
Should we be disussing moderation of suse-linux-e or future opensuse-{techsupport} on this list?
no, not in my mind.
there are two things here:
* should we not create a _new_ list, (keeping the suse-linux-e also), moderated for the ones that prefere this. I know I rarely answer on suse-linux-e for many reason mostly in rapport with the fact 90% of the posts are OT
Ouch.. is it really that bad on suse-linux-e ? Haven't been subscribed there for years now, the only reason being that it's so high-traffic. But guys, what do you expect if we create yet another suse-linux-e ? - - if the problem is high traffic, you'll end up with the same amount on that other support list, and probably with a lot of people being subscribed on both - - if the problem is off-topic mails, you'll end up with the same proportion anyway and if you don't want that by moderating it more thoroughly, then you should do that on suse-linux-e in the first place What's the point of splitting user support into two lists ? Wouldn't that be even more misleading and confusing for end-users ? Personally, I think so.
* should we "filter" the opensuse/opensuse-project (NOT suse-linux-e) subscribe. I think this is very difficult because a moderator can't know on what purpose anybody asks for subscription, and that kicking somebody out of the list is rude. I propose (if the list manager can afford that)
Well, yes, apart from it being very difficult to do (how to select whom to allow ?), I find the idea of a closed list very questionable. If it's the only and last option of being able to get some work done without all the noise, then be it, but I don't think we've reached that point (not anywhere near that actually). While I do agree that renaming the list to opensuse-project or something like that would probably be a good idea, as it's more precise as of its goals, but I'm against closing that list.
to make a more sensible thing: have two states for the list users: moderated/not moderated. Starting at moderated. if the first post is in chart, the moderator pass the user status to non moderated (so one time work) if the first post is not in chart, write to the user (this can be a predefined text) to explain that his post can't be sent to the list and why and that he is still subscribed and can write if in chart and then be freed it will always possible to set back at moderated the status of a people, but _this_ should be avoided.
Are you nuts ? Far too complicated, too much work, probably impossible to do in practice... It would have to be done manually by a person you'd have to put full-time on that activity. Forget it, just an open list, possibly change its name, send out replies telling off-topic posters to please ask support questions on suse-linux-e, and that's it.
The main importance of this system is that sometime a post from an old subscriber of the least is OT. Or seems so. This can be a mistake, or the OT status is questionable (often when the mail asks for a bug, I know a can send a post to the wrong list, being subscribed to many), it's unimportant, this can be easily corrected. Most really OT posts come from newcomers.
Yes, but just send them a polite mail telling them it's off-topic and
that's it.
Let's get a little realistic, and it's about time to try to close and
summarize this endless thread.
Any action items as a result ?
Rename this list ? If so, to what ? Any agreement ?
cheers
