SUSE 10 has wine version 20050725-3
I have been looking at winetools, and it looks like this script/install of MS office stuff does not list this version as being supported ... and it also looks like most versions using the 200XXX format (newer than the .9x versioning, apparently) are problematic for winetools.
crap -- how did I misunderstand that so badly ... <sigh> Never mind, I have now downloaded and installed Marcus' fine wine rpm for SUSE .... Sorry about wasting your your inbox capacity and your eye muscles ...
