i then hit ctrl+alt+f7 to return to the installation screen, go to the partitioning, go to custom partitioning, but my usb device is not there as an option. Do i need a special driver or something?
That is odd - I think you should open a bugreport. I have done a lot of installs off a USB-stick, and the USB device is always listed as /dev/sda in the partitioner. What does "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" say? when you swap to a shell, can you do "fdisk /dev/sda" ? /Per Jessen, Zürich
