How does Linux determine what updates are available for a system, does it check the installed software and patches, or is this unique key generated and stored on the system?
No key, it is a database. Read everything about "rpm". Hint: /var/lib/YaST2/you/mnt/i386/update/{suse_version}/patches/
I illustrate with an example below:
PC 1 = no internet connection, unable to be networked PC 2 = internet connection enabled, able to be networked
Create a patch CD on a machine with network connection, and use it to update any other machine you want. Roughly it means duplicating the ftp update server directory structure. - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFEPZ/jtTMYHG2NR9URApY0AJ9hgWLuTRih+6Vr8swfMG9dhw15OwCfRmCU YufZ+ZkVtRNrrFP2TJ6p07U= =+lV7 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
