Because konkeror might have finished, but the kernel can keep writing even for a minute or two more (nosync, you know).
Provided we use konkeror, there are many other things that could be writing there. OOo, for instance.
So, in order to prevent corruption, we make the device unusable? These devices usually have lights that flash. When the flashing has stopped for a few seconds, it's done.
