Is it possible to update a suse 10 system that is NOT connected to the internet at all?
Can this be done with a newer install CD (when one comes out), or by wget'ing some files, moving them to the machine on CD or DVD and then upgrading using yum locally?
Hi Michael,
When I see "update" I think YaST Online Update... mostly security patches and major bug fixes released to keep the presently installed version "healthy." If this is the kind of update you're referring to, here's the procedure I use:
From the initial installation and first run of YOU, I keep the "remove patches after installation" checkbox *not* checked to preserve a local copy of all the patches. They're stored in a specially structured and indexed/managed directory *system* that can be copied.moved wherever a local YOU patch source is needed. They're stored in "/var/lib/YaST2/you.
I used to do this, but I noticed that obsolete updates remained. So you could have a couple kernels, a few open office, and whatever. I really wish there was a way to prune the local copy. It is not simply a matter of deleting files, as some updates rely on previous patches. Making everything less than clear. I think a mirror (rsync?) must be the best way, deleting local things as they leave the update source. I have not tried this. It is on my to-do list. -- Roger
