I am using Kmail 1.8.2 on SUSE 10 with SMTP as my transport. The smart host is one of my provider's servers (smpt.1und1.de). I could change the transport in Kmail to sendmail and potentially even use my firewall/router to send the messages directly to the recipient servers. I'm lazy and don't want to go through the hassle. However, it might be worth it for the experience of doing so.
If you're on a dial-up line, your mail might be rejected from places using dialup RBLs. You could still change to a local mail-setup, with a relay_transport=smtp.1und1.de - it might be worth trying. /Per Jessen, Zürich -- http://www.spamchek.com/ - managed anti-spam and anti-virus solution.
