Just now I ran diff on a couple of files, each of which is 805 bytes. diff ran for about A HALF HOUR and still never completed. Moreover, I couldn't ^C out of it (hit that about a hundred times). It looked up the GUI so I couldn't switch to another window or Ctrl-Alt-F1 into a console. I had to hit the power button to get out of it!!
And why no output from "rpm -V diffutils" or "rpm -Va|grep diff"?
# rpm -qf /usr/bin/diff diffutils-2.8.7-4 # rpm -V diffutils # rpm -V diffutils # rpm -Va|grep diff
-V only produces output if there is a problem. Getting no output means there is no problem. Were the files on a storage where there was a problem? Perhaps a network drive that had lost contact, or perhaps a hard disk that broke, or a CD with read errors? All those could produce the problem you describe
