Hello to all on the list from Adam in NYC
I am running SuSE 10.0 (32 bit install) on an emachines M6805 Athlon 64.
My 64,000 dollar question is:
How can you dual-boot on a pre-existing filesystem and how can you do it? Actually I am using GRUB and I have Windows XP 32 Home installed on it.
Can you re-use the same root system for the 64 bit kernel? I have been using the Ubuntu LiveCD for A64 and it runs great. However, it does not have the tohd= and fromhd= options from Knoppix installed.
2nd question is: How can you, using GRUB, boot off of an CD ISO on the root filesystem? If so, how and if you have a URL, please point the way. I have not tried it. But, 32-bit utilities will work with a 64-bit system. The issues are mostly with the libraries and the modules. The 64-bit root file system will contain both 32-bit and 64-bit libraries, so the only issue I can think of is the 32-bit kernel and the associated modules.
Here is how I would proceed.
1. Save the 32-bit kernel, modules (they are in /lib/modules), initrd
2. Install the 64-bit system replacing your 32-bit system.
3. Copy your saved kernel and modules to the appropriate places,
renaming the kernel and initrd.
4. Add a line in Grub for the 32-bit kernel.
Another issue is if there are 64-bit versions of the standard
utilities.
In any event, it is worth a try if you have the time to experiment.
