I think it is because your X server is not up. Is the
X running? or are you in runlevel 3? However, either
case when you run yast2 or you (alias of 'yast2
online_update') from command line it should bring up
the text mode version.

when i try to run yast from the command line and run online update i get this error message: kdesu: cannot connect to X server
the box started as a sles 8 box and was upgraded to sles 9.
