I have an HP ScanJet 3400C. It's detected in YAST, but there are no drivers for it. I did find a driver at SANE Bbut, I can't seem to find how to add it to the list of already installed drivers.
It is not easy to add a new SANE driver to the YaST scanner configuration. The reason is that the YaST scanner database is built from the /usr/share/sane/descriptions/*.desc description files by calling /usr/lib/YaST2/bin/create_scanner_database I.e. you would need an appropriate description file and then you must remove the old YaST scanner database /var/lib/YaST2/scanner_database.ycp This would happen automatically if you install a new version of the "sane" package which is made by Suse. Only the "sane" package which is made by Suse (and perhaps the package from "packman") has the description files included.
Therefore you should set up the scanner manually. See http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/10/jsmeix_scanner-setup-92.html how to do it.
This all may not work if you install a SANE driver from a scanner manufacturer. In this case follow the instructions from the manufacturer how to set up their driver.
Do not know which version of Suse you are using but with 9.0, 9.3 it works without problem for me with exact the same scanner. Go into /etc/sane.d/ and edit the file dll.conf The entry niash should not have a # in front. The niash backend is fully intregrate and should work now. For this HP scanner there are no drivers from the manufacturer. Regards
Hi, I'm running SuSE 10.0 Boxed Ed on a ProStar 2794 laptop that I use primarily as a desktop. (I use a different laptop on the road.) I opened /etc/sane.d/ . The directory appears to be blank. But, that's OKAY. I've decided to buy some new peripherals (scanner and Zip drive). In June, I'll be able to start experimenting again. Thank you, -Joe
