Oh, well, at least I have learned quite a bit more about device and interface initialization by this exercise.
That's the best bit of tinkering with this - all this good stuff you pick up along the way. :-) Did you get it to work, by the way?
Yes, It works like a champ. I removed: SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{address}=="00:4c:69:6e:75:79", IMPORT="/sbin/rename_netiface %k eth0" and then I changed: SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{address}=="00:04:5a:87:c8:43", IMPORT="/sbin/rename_netiface %k eth1" to: SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", SYSFS{address}=="00:04:5a:87:c8:43", IMPORT="/sbin/rename_netiface %k eth0" Now the network comes up as expected every time. I also submitted it to bubzilla and the concensus is that it is too rare to fix. Basically, just edit /etc/udev/rules.d/30-net_persistent_names.rules manually to remove the offending entry. I like that solution, and that is what I figured, but it just took me three days to find /etc/udev/rules.d/30-net_persistent_names.rules.
