Actually, that's one of the main differences between lilo and grub. You do not need to reinstall grub when you change the menu.lst file. It should just work after adding the right entries.
I didn't like what /boot/message did to the bottom of my screen in SuSE 9.3, and had trouble getting rid of it. Just commenting out gfxmenu (hd0,7)/boot/message in /boot/grub/menu.lst wasn't enough. I renamed /boot/message to disable it, but if my memory serves me, I had to re-install GRUB through YaST in order for the change to take effect. I don't want to admit how long it took me to figure this out. Peter Taylor
