Has anyone run across sharing Samba over subnets? Yes, I have. You have to configure the "interfaces" parameter in smb.conf, so that broadcasts will use the appropriate interfaces. For example, when I used it with my VPN, I used the command: interfaces = 192.168.1.0/24 tun0
what does the "tun0" signify? I didn't see it in the man page, nor in Olaf Borkner-Delcarlo's Samba Book.
It's the VPN "interface", created by OpenVPN.
or interfaces = 192.168.1.0/24 10.1.0.2/32
Which is preferable?
That depends on your situation and preferences. They both refer to the same thing, providing the VPN terminates on that system. If you have a network, where the computer running Samba is not the one where the VPN terminates, you'll have to use the IP address form, as that computer wouldn't "know" about the VPN.
