Has anyone got a beta1 loaded on a dual boot machine (windowsXP and SuSE beta1)? I've tried it and it will not boot (or reboot) into windows. In order to use windows, I boot up with a windows98 bootable floppy and then do an fdisk /mbr. This allows me to boot into windows but when I want to return to linux, I have to put the CD in and repair the boot loader, writing it in the master boot record. The default setting is to write it in the /dev/hdb1 partition but this does not work. My computer has two hard disks /dev/hda which has windows XP and /dev/hdb which contains SuSE.
I'm wondering if this problem is peculiar to my machine and set up or has anyone else noticed this problem? Should I submit a bug report?
I've had this problem too. Assumed that you have Windows installed in the first partition of /dev/hda and grub is installed in the MBR of /dev/hda, here comes my solution: If you are running SUSE, switch to root and load the file /boot/grub/menu.lst into an editor of your choice. In this file search for the following entry: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows### title Windows chainloader (hd0,0)/dev/hda1 Now change this entry into this: ###Don't change this comment - YaST2 identifier: Original name: windows### title Windows root (hd0,0) makeactive chainloader +1 Next time your windows should come up without problems. You could do this also with Yast, but its a lot of mouseclicks and its not easyer. regards, Jens
